The newly redesigned Emancipation Park, located in Houston’s Third Ward, is the oldest public park in Texas. Originally purchased by four former slaves in 1872 and the only public park in Houston opened to African-Americans through 1950, the park design includes new playgrounds, building renovations, including a community center, a new plaza, picnic shelters and pool house.
